Hydroxyapatite has become a key mineral in modern oral care — and at the same time, there are lots of questions around it. Here you can find out, at your own pace, what hydroxyapatite actually is, how it works and how we use it at Dentafari.

What is hydroxyapatite?

In short: hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral — and the main component of your tooth enamel, which is around 97% made of it. So it isn’t a foreign substance, but literally the stuff your teeth are made of. We use it in all three flavours, deliberately without nano particles (particle size above 100 nm).

The hydroxyapatite we use is obtained by recrystallisation from high-purity calcium carbonate. What makes it special:

  • Balanced calcium-to-phosphate ratio that supports natural remineralisation
  • Porous structure that supports the release of minerals
  • Smoothing of the tooth surface for a naturally brighter appearance
  • No nano particles

How hydroxyapatite works

Hydroxyapatite provides calcium and phosphate — the natural building blocks of tooth enamel. It supports natural remineralisation and contributes to smoothing the tooth surface, for a naturally brighter appearance through surface smoothing — without bleaching agents, without peroxides. Research has been studying hydroxyapatite in oral care for years; we present the studies neutrally.

Why we don’t give percentages

We deliberately don’t state a percentage for our hydroxyapatite content. A percentage on its own says nothing about quality or effectiveness. What counts is the quality of the hydroxyapatite used and how it’s integrated into the overall formula — not an eye-catching number.

Nano or not? Our approach

At Dentafari, we deliberately use functionalised natural hydroxyapatite — entirely without nano particles. What nano-hydroxyapatite is all about and what the evidence says, you can read in detail in our article Is hydroxyapatite harmful?

Hydroxyapatite in the three flavours

Hydroxyapatite forms the basis of all Dentafari tooth powders. Crisp Mint adds plant enzymes and activated charcoal; our two Sensitive flavours, Orange-Mandarin and Soothing Mint, combine hydroxyapatite with a postbiotic. All flavours are fluoride-free, vegan and have a fully readable INCI list.

How to recognise good hydroxyapatite

It now appears on lots of packaging, and the quality behind it varies a great deal. Three things help you assess it, no chemistry degree required.

Does it say anything about particle size? Anyone using nano particles has to declare this in the ingredients list. If you find the addition “nano” there, you know. If it isn’t there, none may be included.

Can you read the whole ingredients list? A short, fully understandable list tells you more about a product than any percentage on the front. You’ll find ours on every product page and on the ingredients page.

Does the manufacturer explain where the mineral comes from? Hydroxyapatite can be obtained in different ways. Ours is made by recrystallisation from high-purity calcium carbonate. If a manufacturer says nothing about it, there’s usually a reason.

What you can realistically expect

Remineralisation is a slow, daily process, not an event. Your saliva constantly releases minerals to the tooth surface and takes them up again; hydroxyapatite supplies the right building blocks for this. Whatever changes, changes over weeks, not overnight.

The same applies to the brighter appearance: it comes from the surface becoming smoother and reflecting light more evenly, not from a bleaching agent. Here, regularity achieves more than any single use.
