Packaging for tooth powder has to protect the powder reliably and should be easy to sort after use. That’s why at Dentafari we deliberately chose packaging made from mono-material plastic – and for good reasons.

What is mono-material plastic?

Mono-material plastic is a packaging material made from just one type of plastic. Unlike multi-layer packaging, which often combines different materials and is therefore difficult to recycle, mono-material plastic is single-type and designed for recycling. In other words: the pouch is made from a single plastic family rather than a laminate of different materials.

Why not glass or paper?

Many people wonder why we don’t use glass or paper packaging. The answer lies in the product itself: tooth powder is extremely sensitive to moisture and needs to be stored dry and airtight. Paper may be renewable, but it doesn’t offer enough protection. Glass is heavy and energy-intensive to produce.

Designed for recycling – what matters

For a pouch to be recognised at the sorting stage, these points matter most:

  • Mono-material made from LDPE: LDPE is currently considered the most suitable material for flexible packaging, as it is the most widely accepted in existing recycling infrastructure.
  • No carbon black colouring: Black packaging cannot be detected by near-infrared sorting machines and often ends up being incinerated.
  • No rigid plastic parts: Rigid components interfere with sorting. Our packaging is made entirely from flexible material.
  • Minimum size 5×5 cm: Smaller packaging isn’t recognised by many sorting facilities. Our pouches meet this minimum size.

This is no guarantee that the pouch will actually be recycled. But it does show that it is prepared for sorting and recovery.

What you can do

The empty refill pouches can be disposed of via the packaging recycling collection (in Germany the Gelber Sack or Wertstofftonne) – empty and clean. That way the pouch reaches recycling sorting.
