What is SLS – and why is it in everything?

Sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS for short, is the surfactant that gives toothpaste its characteristic foam. The same surfactant that creates foam in shampoos, shower gels and cleaning products. It's cheap, widespread and effective when it comes to foaming. What it does to the oral environment is another question.

Many people report a burning sensation or an unpleasant feeling in the mouth after brushing — without knowing that SLS is often behind it. The surfactant is considered irritating to mucous membranes and alters the pH balance in the mouth. In sensitive people, it has been associated with frequently recurring mouth ulcers.

Dentafari's alternative: Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate

Instead of SLS, we rely on Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate — an amino-acid-based surfactant derived from coconut oil. It produces a mild, fine foam, is considerably gentler on the oral mucosa and is biodegradable. Yes, it's more expensive than SLS. That's a decision we stand behind.
